Hungry for Change Documentary

Hungry for Change is a documentary film based on interviews with various experts, and presents the idea that the key to weight loss is detoxification. Among the speakers it features Jon Gabriel, who lost over 200 pounds of weight after he realized that burning calories was not going to do it. He implies that his body was holding onto fat as a means to buffer it against toxins, and once he started detoxifying, the weight came off naturally.

The experts seen in this documentary movie include: Jon Gabriel, Daniel Vitalis, Dr. Christiane Northrup (author of 'Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom), Kris Carr (author of 'Crazy Sexy Cancer'), Dr. Alejandro Junger (author of 'Clean'), Dr. Mercola (author and an osteopathic physician), David Wolfe, Mike Adams, Frank Ferrante (subject of the film: May I Be Frank), Jamie Oliver (chef), Evita Ramparte (a health journalist), etc.

The Hungry for Change documentary was directed by Carlo Ledesma, Laurentine ten Bosch and James Colquhoun in 2012. The main topics discussed are weight loss, the problem with diets, the problem with toxic foods and how to overcome food addictions.

Here you will find a summary of some of the key points made in the documentary film.

Summary of Points from the Hungry for Change documentary

We live in a world on abundance and an attitude of lack.

Up to two-thirds of those on a diet regain more weight than when they started. Diets don't work.

Jon Gabriel lost over 200 pounds without dieting. Before losing weight he weighed over 400 pounds. He shares his success story in 'the Gabriel Method' (book).

Sugar is without question the cocaine of the food world.

The whole dieting paradigm is flawed.

When we taste something fatty or sweet, we immediately want more of it. For our hunter-gatherer ancestors fat or sugar meant survival - even up to about 200 years ago. Now there is a lot of food available but it's the wrong kind.

Hunter-gatherer people receive plenty of nutrition and little calories from their foods.

You could be eating to your heart's content, 10,000 calories per day, and if you don't get the specific nutrients your body needs in a way that you can digest and assimilate, then you're starving on a nutritional basis and your body stays hungry.

Man-made foods like bread, sugar, and table salt trick your body into thinking that you're getting nutrition and so your body stays hungry for them, but the cells don't get nourished. So you're starving on a cellular level.

People are chronically starved of nutrients. They keep eating and eating but the foods that they eat don't ever have enough of the nutrients that they need. They do have a lot of calories, though. People are overfed but starving to death.

We left the farms, moved to cities and we lost our instincts.

We are not eating food, we are eating food-like products. The objective of the food manufacturers is to make a product that will make you buy it, last long, and make the company a lot of profit.

You end up with a disaster by combining both processed junk-food diets and an indoor lifestyle.

People suffer from obesity, low-energy, fog of cognition and they lose the will to take control of the situation. They turn to a doctor who prescribes a pill and is unwilling to address the real symptoms, which are varied and complex.

Biggest cause of obesity bar none is addiction. One cigarette leads to a chain-reaction, it's an invisible prison. Certain foods are addictive in the same way that cigarettes are.

Food companies manufacture addiction into many of the foods.

The food industry have the wherewithal and the scientific resources to identify very carefully what appeals to the average consumer. The result is that they can use chemical derivatives to create concoctions which really taste quite good and can have an addictive component.

MSG and free glutamates are used to enhance the flavour in about 80% of all processed foods, in both restaurants and grocery stores. They can be hidden behind over 50 different names, e.g. hydrolyzed vegetable protein, hydrolyzed soy protein, maltodextrin, whey protein concentrate, etc.

MSG makes you want to eat more. It excites the part of the brain that is responsible for the fat programs. Your body activates the fat programs and gets fatter. Scientists know this, everyone knows this, but no-one is saying anything.

In science they use MSG when they need to make test-mice fat (search: 'MSG obesity induced in mice') and this substance is in 80% of all the modern foods.

A processed, refined-sugar food or soda deliver a biochemical change in the brain. It will make you momentarily uplifted and happy. People get used to that feeling of being 'elated'. But that feeling very quickly drops off and you're left empty. Where are the nutrients, the things that the body and mind really crave?

They manipulate the molecular structure of food.

Hungry for Change book, the official trailer:

Diet cola has a certain addictive effect on the brain. It's because there is a deadly combination of aspartame and caffeine in the soda - and those two together create a unique blend of excitotoxins, which kill brain cells. But before the cells die, they have a moment of excitement, like a 'buzz'. So some diet cola addicts can drink a litre or two litres a day and not eat. Some people, especially women, drink it to keep their weight down. But artificial sweeteners actually cause weight-gain and carbohydrate cravings. There are no calories in diet soda but it will nevertheless cause weight gain!

Aspartame causes formaldehyde build-up in the brain and frontal-lobe inflammation. This causes cognitive problems, e.g. migraines, visual disturbances, seizures in more serious cases, severe aberrations in vision, symptoms that mimic multiple sclerosis, headaches, neurological problems, etc. It can also lead to cancers.

Dr. Ralph G Walton's studied the toxicity of aspartame and 90 of his studies showed that there were no side effects of aspartame. However, 90% of those studies were funded by the pharmaceutical industry and independent studies found the exact reverse results.

Nicotine, MSG, processed sugars and aspartame cause addiction and create life-long customers!

Phosphoric acid has been linked to bone density loss and MSG to neurological problems, diabetes type 2 and obesity.

Blueberries in blueberry muffins are not blueberries. They are made of propylene glycol, partially hydrogenated oils, liquid sugars and artificial colours.

A fat-free product is usually loaded with sugar. It can be 100% fat free but when ingested the sugar will turn into fat in the body. Sugar surges the blood sugar levels high and the pancreas secrets insulin, which is the fat-producing hormone. Sugar being fat-free is factually correct but at the same time unbelievably misleading.

Fat is good for you if it's the right kind of fat. You need the correct fats and proteins to feel satiated. Bad fats are: soy bean oil, canola oil, corn oil, partially hydrogenated oils, margarine spreads, etc. Healthy fats can be gained from chia seeds, flax seeds, salmon, avocados, etc.

High-fructose corn syrup is not natural because it's highly concentrated and isolated - it's a chemically-manipulated version. It's 'pharmaceutical sugar'.

Coca leaf in tea form is natural and safe, non-addictive. But it's not healthy in the concentrated form of cocaine. The difference is between the native coca plant and the pharmaceutical cocaine.

The definition of sugar needs to expand. It is more than just the white powder. It is also bread, pasta, cereal, rice, potatoes, corn, waffles, pancakes, etc.

Sugar increases beta-endorphins in the brain, which is a feel-good natural opiate, a morphine-like substance - a 'comfort food'.

It's not fat that makes you fat, it's sugar!

Sugar is a drug, just like alcohol. You become habituated to the effect and eventually you will need more and more to get the same effect.

Milk has a lot of sugar in it as well.

Food kills more people than all drugs combined.

Why don't highly intelligent people eat healthy? Because they don't know the nature of the trap.

Premature death comes from sugar, alcohol and smoking.

You can't force yourself to lose weight, Jon Gabriel explains in his book, the Gabriel Method. You have to go from the attitude of 'I want it but can't have it' to 'I can have it but I don't want it'. This is a massive paradigm shift.

Keep the focus on adding new foods, foods that are not man-made.

The best strategy is just to add the good stuff and eventually it's going to cancel out the bad stuff. It completely deactivates the neuroses we have about diets and what we have to eat. Add simple foods, plant foods into your diet.

Jon Gabriel changed his focus from dieting to finding the real reasons why his body wanted to be fat.

Lot of us have some healing to do because our neurological and endocrine systems have been under attack.

Fat is the body's way of protecting us. The body produces mucus to cover the chemicals and it produces more fat. Most of the chemicals are lipophilic ('fat-loving'), they don't dissolve in water but they dissolve in fat. So they attach to the fat in the body. If you force the body into burning fat without creating conditions for the body to be able to cleanse and detoxify and neutralize and make these chemicals water-soluble so that they can be sweated off and peed off. You're burning fat but not really getting rid of the toxins. These toxins are left to cause damage in the body.

As long as you're taking in more toxins than you are eliminating, your body is not going to let you lose fat because losing fat would release more toxins into your body. So you have to first address the fact that you are being assaulted with toxins.

Excerpt from the Hungry for Change documentary: Why You Can't Lose Weight:

The body only wants to heal and to detoxify. Only the body can detoxify, and only if there are no new toxins coming in.

Detoxify first. Foods that detoxify the body are chlorophyll-rich green foods and gelatinous plant-foods, like chia seeds and aloe vera. The gelatinous fibres move through our digestive tract binding things. They absorb bile salts which contain the fat-soluble toxins which the liver is trying to get rid of.

Parsley and cilantro especially have been used for detox. Cilantro binds with heavy metals.

Cleaning our bodies is not difficult, it just requires green plant foods, gelatinous foods and good quality water. And good air and sunlight. Put in gentle foods and be out in nature and your body will cleanse itself very easily.

When the weight starts coming off, people get so excited that they don't want to stop. And then eventually you can start to add more foods in from healthy sources, e.g. vegetables and fruit.

Drink a quart of dark green vegetable juice every day: cucumber and celery as a base, then add the dark green leaves. Mix with a bit of pineapple, lime and apple. It tastes divine.

Juicing is the ultimate fast food.
hungry for change documentary image, juice is fast food

After 3 days, 10 days, 2 weeks of juicing you will start feeling and looking different.

Avoid highly oxidative foods, such as fried and barbecued foods.

Your skin will turn around in 30 days. Juices beat skin creams.

It's not just what you're eating, it's also what's eating you. If you're upset, don't eat. When we're upset we are trying to fill a hole.

Obesity is not a problem. It's a solution to covering stress, etc. It is important to find out when did it start. That's the bit where you are not satisfied.

Sleep deprivation, dehydration, stress - mental or emotional - is causing chemistry in our bodies. The body is trying to protect you.

Steroid medication makes you put on fat.

The best way to get rid of stress hormones is deep sleep.

Stress increases fluid retention. Sleep as long as you need to. Exercise really metabolises stress hormones and creates those feel-good hormones that you would otherwise get from sugar.

Laughter decreases stress-hormones and pain and improves immunity.

Visualize the body you want to have, it's a powerful tool for weight loss. It's like a language you can use to talk to your subconscious mind.

Look at a picture of yourself looking how you want to look. Look at it for 30 seconds every day. Imagine yourself being in that body.

Love for yourself and other people is the most important thing for weight loss.

Accept yourself unconditionally, place an affirmation saying this on your bathroom mirror. Say it to yourself twice a day for 30 days. Around day 28 something shifts and you start believing it.

Hungry for Change Documentary Critical Reviews:

Hungry for Change - Critical Review by Wellness Mama: Wellness Mama wishes the documentary supported the eating of meat, animal-based fats and gelatin. She also thinks that smoothies are better for health than juices but agrees wholeheartedly about many other key topics of the movie, namely: eating more vegetables, avoiding toxins and chemicals, understanding the mental aspects of dieting, and letting go of feelings of guilt.

Hungry for Change - Critical Review by the Lazy Caveman: The author agrees with anti-sugar approach, as well as the points made in the film regarding skin health, fermented foods and the opioid effects of sugar, flour and dairy. He points out, however, that juicing is not a magic pill for weight loss, and questions the science behind some of the ideas put forward in the film. He also generally questions the credentials of some of the speakers featured. The Lazy Caveman is a proponent of the Paleo Diet.

Hungry for Change - Critical Review by Rebooted Body:

This reviewer praises the film for the most part, although he doesn't embrace juicing as much, due to the high-sugar content (of fruit juices) and the fact that juicing is not 'natural'. He also wishes that the documentary addressed the benefits of saturated fat and the dangers of grain toxicity more directly, as well as the importance of gut flora and gut health.

Critical Review by Body Moment: Chris from Body Moment criticises the Hungry for Change documentary mainly for three things. He says that the speakers have a commercial interest in promoting juicing, that the film focuses too heavily on the 'unproven' benefits of alternative therapies, and that the idea of detoxification is faulty. Unfortunately he doesn't justify his views very thoroughly.

Hungry for Change - Critical Review on the Spark People website

Pensievegazer writes on Spark People that she was sceptical about this documentary first, until she did some research and found that the statements made in the film were factual. She provides links to research papers on PubMed to support these findings.

Hungry for Change Documentary - Critical Review on the Energise for Life/ Alkaline Diet Blog website: Ross Bridgeford states that Hungry for Change documentary is the most influential, motivating force for change he has ever seen. He then provides a long summary of the points made in the film.

"Molecular biology has shown that even the simplest of all living systems on the earth today, bacterial cells, are exceedingly complex objects. Although the tiniest bacterial cells are incredibly small, weighing less than 10-12 gms, each is in effect a veritable micro-miniaturized factory containing thousands of exquisitely designed pieces of intricate molecular machinery, made up altogether of one hundred thousand million atoms, far more complicated than any machine built by man and absolutely without parallel in the nonliving world."
